Rainfall data 2016

This has been the second driest year in the ten years that I've been keeping records (yes, ten whole years!). We either had loads of rain or very little. Autumn was so dry that my lake didn't refill completely until mid January 2017, which is the latest ever. I think during late summer the lawn was the brownest I've ever seen it. I just about managed to keep my plants happy by endless watering; again thank goodness for the 4,000 litre reservoir in the old septic tank, although I don't want to see my water bill as I used mains most of the time.

Rainfall data 2014 and 2015

I didn't get to do this last year for obvious reasons so here's the last two years' data. Of course this post is just for my records!

RAINFALL 2014:

Jan 163.5
Feb 180.5
Mar   42.5
Apr   60.25
May  53.25
Jun   31.0
Jul    70.0
Aug 136.5
Sep    7.0 !!!
Oct   92.5
Nov 144.5
Dec  85.5

TOTAL: 1,067.0

2014 has been the wettest year since I started keeping records, but I think it must be the wettest since moving here in 2004. That's not to say that I didn't need to water the garden, with only 7mm falling in September and the usual dry period during June.

RAINFALL 2015:

Jan  97.5
Feb  91.5
Mar  35.5
Apr  79.5
May 67.5
Jun  21.5
Jul   48.0
Aug 114.0
Sep  56.5
Oct  24.5 !!!
Nov  85.5
Dec  48.0

TOTAL: 769.50mm

Back to a dry year again, but with August saving the day, otherwise I would have been watering from June through October. October's rainfall was incredibly low, as was December's. Here's hoping for a wet winter 2016 to replenish the water table. This year however the 4,000 litre ex septic tank water has been a godsend as I was able to hose the front garden from that tank using a pump.

Rainfall data since I started being geeky and keeping records:

2007:  944mm
2008:  878mm
2009:  867mm
2010:  757mm
2011:  663.75mm (over a quarter of which fell in December)

2012:  973.5mm

2013:  969.75mm
2014: 1,067mm
2015:   769.50mm

Rainfall data 2013

A very boring post which is just for my records, so don't bother reading unless you are a total geek. Like me. ;-)

Rainfall for the year 2013

Jan 76.5
Feb 78.0
Mar 141.0
Apr 56.0
May 106.5
Jun 39.75
Jul 102.5
Aug 34.5
Sep 35.5
Oct 60.5
Nov 104.5
Dec 134.5

Total: 969.75mm

It's been a strange year with some really heavy rainfalls at times yet still the usual dry period during summer, mostly during August and September. It would be so nice not to have to get the hosepipe out but rain never falls evenly through the year! This year has been almost as wet as last year, and good for replenishing the water table after a couple of years with dry winters.

Previous years' rainfall:

2007:  944mm
2008:  878mm
2009:  867mm
2010:  757mm
2011:  663.75mm (over a quarter of which fell in December)

2012:  973.5mm

Rainfall data 2012

Rainfall for the year 2012

Jan: 53mm
Feb: 21mm (rain and a bit of snow)
Mar: 28mm
Apr: 142mm
May: 65mm
Jun: 90mm
Jul:  73.5mm
Aug: 26.75mm
Sep: 64mm
Oct: 159.5mm
Nov: 72.75mm
Dec: 178mm

Total for the year: 973.5mm

which is the wettest year I have recorded since I started in 2007!!! I still had to use my hosepipe in March after a really dry spring, and again during a two month dry period from mid July to mid September, so I won't have a low water bill this year. What a shame the rain can't spread itself out and we could have 100mm each summer month and only about 50mm each winter month.... but I have to be grateful that this year we have had a really wet autumn which is replenishing the water table, after two really dry winters in a row.

Previous years' rainfall:

2007:  944mm
2008:  878mm
2009:  867mm
2010:  757mm
2011:  663.75mm (over a quarter of which fell in December)

A very strange year

Gardening wise that is. Otherwise I think it was a very pleasant year! But as the point of this blog (at this moment in time; who know what I may decide to blather about in the future) is to record 'stuff' about my garden then it's that to which I am referring. A dry winter followed by an early warm and dry spring (the driest since goodness knows when), then thankfully a reasonably wet summer, followed by the driest autumn since goodness knows when. And then came December when the heavens opened and I have just recorded the wettest month since I started keeping records over 5 years ago. But only just.

This morning as I was ambling about in the drizzle, as you do (well, as I do), I noticed my purple Hellebore covered in buds with a couple of flowers open already! I'm not entirely surprised by this because the first year I planted it, it flowered away gaily in August and then again the following spring. So who knows, it could be late or it could be early! Here's a pic that I took on 9th Feb this year.

I also spotted the first snowdrop almost open - it's at that stage where the flower is there in full and drooping downwards but not quite opened up. That's when I consider spring to be sprung (ever the optimist!) or at the very least, the signs of a new season starting. But certainly the garden is way advanced in terms of bulbs all appearing, even tulips, whereas it hasn't yet quite died down for the winter. It, and I, don't know whether we are coming or going. I am having days where I feel raring to go and others where I want to hibernate.

The other things that don't know what season it is are the hens and duck! When faced with a glut of eggs the usual recommendation is to freeze some for those times during winter when they go off lay.... hmmmmm do they not realise tomorrow is the 1st of January? I have 6 out of 7 laying, not all every day, but generally getting about 4 eggs a day now. Help!

All sizes and colours -
the white ones are from the ducks

Finally, and as this is mostly a record for me, don't bother reading on if you are sliding around in a quagmire (I know who you are!!) and fed up with the wet stuff falling from the sky...... yes it's squidgy here too but I've been reliably informed it is as nothing compared to the real muddy places.....

My rainfall data

2007:  944mm
2008:  878mm
2009:  867mm
2010:  757mm
2011:  663.75mm (over a quarter of which fell in December)

Do you see a worrying trend with my terribly scientific records?

Now if you have read this far, and 'chapeau' as we say round these parts to you if you have, may I wish you a Happy New Year and hope that your gardens grow, bloom and blossom beautifully next year, and that your harvests will be perfect with just the right amount of everything, no courgette gluts, no blight and no slug damage! Yes we can wish but wouldn't it be boring if it was perfect! See ya next year xx.
